Five Ways to Save Money this Summer

Money Saving Tips for the Summer

It’s summer and that means sun, relaxation, and having a good time. However, the summer can also be expensive. Between nights out on the town, the days spend dining on patios, and the expensive vacations, this time of year can be quite costly. There’s also the fact that summer feels like a time when you should let go, relax, and be a bit less tense. This often translates to people forgetting their budgets and going overboard with the spending.

The good news is that you can certainly save money during the summer and, yes, you can have a good time while doing it. Here are five ways to save money this summer.

Get Outside

One of the best parts of the summer is the weather. The good news is that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to enjoy the summer sun. Sure, relaxing on a patio is a lot of fun, but so is sitting in the park or having a day at the beach. And those last two activities are free.

Take as many opportunities as you can to enjoy the summer weather. It’s a free way to have a good time this summer and you’ll certainly miss the warmth and daylight when winter rolls around.

Attend Free Events

Depending on where you live, you’ll likely find a bunch of free events taking place during the summer. Street fairs, yard sales, exhibitions, carnivals, concerts, and many other events take place during the summer and most of them don’t charge anything to enter. Check local papers and websites to find out what’s going on for free in your neighbourhood.

If you want to save even more money, eat at home before you head out or bring food with you (if it’s allowed.) Many free events have food and drinks for sale, but often at very inflated prices.

If you’re looking for other free activities to take part in this summer, why not play sports with your friends or family? Putting together a soccer, baseball, or football game is a great way to socialize and exercise without breaking the bank. If you can’t get enough people you know together, check local classified sites to find a pick-up game that you can join.

Walk or Bike

Now that the weather is warmer, you won’t need to take the car absolutely everywhere you go. Walking or biking is a great way to save money. Gas is expensive, so if you’re going a relatively short distance, forget the car and walk or bike instead. Not only will this save you money, but you’ll also get some exercise. Plus, you can take a more scenic route and enjoy the outdoors while you travel to your destination. This will be much more enjoyable that being stuck in traffic.

Garden

There are many good reasons to take up gardening this summer. The first one is that you’ll have a good reason for spending a lot of time outdoors. The second is that gardening can be very relaxing and enjoyable. The third is that it often ends up being good exercise.

You don’t need to go overboard and redo your entire property to include a massive garden, but a small garden can be a great way to pass the time during the summer. Plus, you can plant fruits, vegetables, and herbs, which can help you save on your grocery bills. Sure, you probably won’t be able to live entirely off of your garden, but you can save yourself some money here and there, which is certainly better than spending a little bit extra.

Have Picnics

One of the simplest, but most enjoyable summer activities is a picnic. Get some friends and/or family members together, have everyone bring some food, and meet up at a park or on the beach. This is an excellent way to spend the day, eating, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company. Plus, it’s significantly cheaper than going to a bar or restaurant.

If everyone brings one dish, that means that no one person has to shoulder the cost of the entire picnic. It also means that everyone will get to enjoy a wide variety of tastes.

As you can see, there are a lot of ways to enjoy your summer while still saving money. What is your favourite way?
