Ways to Have a Great Weekend Without Spending Money

You work hard during the week and your weekend is the chance to relax and enjoy yourself. That’s good, but having a good time doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money. There are many ways to enjoy yourself, relax, and have fun without opening up your wallet.

Having a “money-free” weekend isn’t something that you’ll need (or want) to do each and every weekend, but it’s certainly a good way to trim your monthly expenses and save a bit of cash. Here are several great ways to have a good time without spending any money.

Clean Up

Cleaning your home might not sound like fun, but it certainly can be. Gather up the family and decide to tackle an area of your home that has been neglected for too long. Put on some music and make a day of it. Decluttering and cleaning up closets, garages, offices, and kitchen cabinets can open up new opportunities and make the rest of your life more efficient and enjoyable.

Have a Yard Sale

What can you do with all of the stuff you gather during your clean up? If something is damaged or useless, you can throw it away, but there’s a good chance that you’ll find some items that you can resell. Unused items can be sold online but, if you have enough of them, you can hold a yard sale or a garage sale instead. Not only is this a great way to spend a weekend without spending money, but it can actually make you some cash!

Play a Sport

Instead of spending money on tickets to a big game this weekend, call up some friends or family members and play a sport instead. If you can’t find anyone who wants to play this weekend, check for local rec leagues or look for pick up games that may be happening nearby. You don’t have to be an experienced athlete to enjoy a game of football, soccer, basketball, or ball hockey. If you already have the equipment, you won’t need to spend a dime!

Learn Something New

Check some books out of the library or do some research online and learn something new this weekend. You might want to learn how to cook a new dish, change the oil in your car, knit a scarf, or just about anything. There is something very rewarding about learning a new skill and doing so is an excellent way to spend your time without spending any money.

Visit the Library

As mentioned above, the library is great for research, but it’s also an excellent place to find so much more. Many libraries loan out more than just books, including DVDs, CDs, magazines, and other great ways to entertain yourself. Some even give access to music and movie streaming services to anyone with a library card. Spend the weekend reading a new book or checking out a new film for free by visiting the library.

Check Out a Community Event

Depending on where you live, you might be able to find free concerts, amateur sporting events, and shows happening nearby. Look at a local community calendar online or in the newspaper and plan an activity that won’t cost a thing.

Discover Some Old Favourites

You probably have a lot of old movies, albums, books, and much more sitting around your home. There’s a good chance that you haven’t enjoyed them very much recently. On your “money-free” weekend, you can dedicate some time to reliving some old favourites and remembering why you liked them so much in the first place.

You can even step things up a notch and have a “movie marathon” where your friends or family members all bring their favourite movies and you watch them back-to-back. This won’t cost any money (as long as you don’t buy or order food or drinks) and it’s a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday.

Cook What You Have

Look in your pantry or freezer and see what you have that you can make into a meal. A “money -free” weekend is a great time to cook up those frozen leftovers or canned goods that you’ve had sitting around for weeks. Experiment with some different ways to cook and clear out some food that been taking up shelf space for a while. You just might stumble upon a new favourite dish!
