How to Have Fun Without Spending Money

Having a Good Time on a Budget

For many people, having fun goes hand-in-hand with spending money. You spend money to see a movie or a sporting event, you spend money going out to a restaurant, you spend money on drinks, and you spend money going shopping. For a lot of us, it doesn’t seem possible to have fun without spending money.

However, you don’t need to drop a lot of cash just to have a good time.

Here are some ways that you can enjoy yourself without breaking the bank.

Visit the Library

The library is a great way to have a fun day for free. All you need is a library card. Not only are there tons and tons of books at each library, but there are also DVDs, CDs, magazines, and much more. Plus, these days, many library systems also give you access to online services, such as streaming videos, e-books, online magazines, and much more. Your local library may even have cultural or historical events taking place that you can enjoy.

Have a Board Games Night

Pull out the old board games from the back of your closet, gather some friends and family, and have a games night. This can be a really fun way to pass the time and you’ll get to revisit some old favourite games. If you don’t like board games, have a card games night instead.

Hit the Beach or Park

If you have a beach nearby, why not visit for the day? If you don’t live near a beach, you can have a fun day in a local park. Pack a picnic lunch, bring along some music or a book, and enjoy yourself outdoors.

Explore

Take a walk through your neighbourhood and just explore the local sites. Visit areas you’ve never been to before, head in directions you’ve never travelled in, and spend the day getting to know a part of your town that you haven’t spent too much time in.

Have “Cleaning Parties”

This is a great activity to have with friends. Set a schedule where you’ll all head to one of your homes each weekend and spend some time helping each other clean and organize your homes. It’s a lot more fun to clean with friends than it is by yourself.

Have a Yard Sale

Not only is this a good way to have fun for free, but it can actually make you some money. We all have items that we don’t need anymore, so why not sell some of them at a yard sale? Make signs, set prices, and get the whole family involved. This is a great way to spend a weekend and it comes with a little financial reward at the end too!

Arrange a Clothing Swap

If you don’t want to sell your unwanted clothes at a yard sale, why not get your friends together and have a clothing swap? Bring the clothes that you don’t wear anymore (as long as they’re still in good condition) and trade.

Go Swimming

Almost every city and town has a public pool that you can visit for free (or at a very low cost). If the weather is warm enough, why not hit the pool for a swim? It’s a lot of fun and also great exercise!

Have a Potluck

This might cost you a little bit of money, but likely far less than you’d spend going to a restaurant. Gather a bunch of friends together and make a plan to have a potluck. Each of you will prepare a different dish to share. If you’d like, you can give the event a theme such as Italian food or Indian food, but that’s up to you. It’s a good idea to make a general plan for who will bring what. For example, have one person bring the appetizers, another couple of people bring main dishes, and someone else can bring dessert. This can prevent ending up in a situation where you have seven desserts and no main course!

Try Some Free Trials

A lot of services (streaming music and video services, for example) offer free trials. It can be worth it to sign up for a trial when you have some free time, so you can check out what is offered at no cost to you. Just remember to cancel your service before the trial runs out, unless you want to start paying.
