Summer Fun Without Going Over Your Budget

How to Enjoy Summer without Going Over Budget

The summer is a time for fun and relaxation. However, many people feel like they can’t have a fun time without spending money. That’s not true! You can enjoy your summer and avoid going over budget at the same time.

You don’t need to take an elaborate vacation, attend a fancy festival, or buy elaborate items to enjoy yourself. There are plenty of ways to enjoy your summer at home without breaking the bank. These options may be especially helpful during these uncertain times, when everyone’s budget is a little tighter and travelling or gathering in large groups may not be possible. However, the tips listed here will work for just about everyone!

Here are some suggestions for enjoying your summer at home without going over budget.

Camp in the Backyard

Can’t get away to a big campground this year? You can still have a great time outdoors by moving the camping trip to your own backyard! Put up a tent in the backyard and head outside with the family for some fun. You can use an actual camping tent if you have one, or get creative with sheets, blankets, ropes, and poles. Eat classic camp food (hot dogs, s’mores, etc.), tell spooky stories, and have a great time!

If you don’t have a backyard, you can still get in on the fun. Why not camp out in your living room instead? The change of scenery will mean a fun adventure for everyone.

Barbecue Something New

Even if you’re not going to a fancy restaurant, you can still experience new tastes. Rather than cooking the same burgers and hot dogs on the grill, why not search out new recipes online instead? There are loads of different things that can be barbecued, so experiment with few.

If you don’t have a barbecue, that’s fine! You can cook up a brand-new summer meal in the kitchen! Cooking up new recipes can be fun for the whole family, a great way to learn a new skill, and you’ll get the benefit of a delicious meal at the end!

Hold a Summer Fashion Show

You don’t need to buy a whole new summer wardrobe to look amazing and have a great time. Dig into your closet and find some items that you can repurpose for this summer. Once you’ve found some, make whatever adjustments you think are needed, then hold a fashion show with your family. You can be as serious or ridiculous as you want!

Host a “Summer Games”

Summer is the perfect time to get outdoors and get active. While the actual summer games won’t happen this year, it doesn’t mean you can’t hold a fun event in your yard or your living room! Decide what sports or contests you’ll be holding, then have your family compete against one another for “medals” that you can easily make at home from recycled materials. You can pick actual sports, funny games, or a combination of the two.

Learn New Skills

Most people have more free time during the summer than they do the rest of the year. Take advantage of this time and use it to learn a new skill. Whether you want to learn to cook, knit, do woodworking, garden, or learn just about anything else, there’s a good chance you can find tutorials online to help you get started. Your local public library can likely help you out as well. Many libraries now have online resources, you can probably borrow digital books to help you with your learning.

Have a Movie Marathon

Log onto your favourite streaming service (or stack of DVDs) and host your own movie marathon. You can “theme” the event (such as showing films with a certain actor or director, from a certain decade, etc.) and have a great time. Buy your own movie snacks from the grocery store and spend the day lounging around watching movies. You’ll have a great time and it will cost you a lot less than heading to a theatre.

Depending on where you live and your set up, you might even be able  to hold your screening outside! Take advantage of the summer weather and set up a screen outside in your backyard. If you don’t have a screen or a projector, you can probably make basic ones with items you have around the house (a white sheet makes a good screen, for example). Get creative and enjoy yourself!
